~ The City of Mesa is offering a helping hand to small businesses through their Mesa Business Builder (MBB) Small Business Assistance Program. The program, which has been running since 2021, provides personalized consulting and expert support to help small businesses grow, overcome challenges, and plan for long-term success.

According to Jaye ODonnell, the Mesa Economic Development Director, the program has already assisted over 490 businesses in the city. In the fiscal year 24-25 alone, 151 businesses were able to access more than $350,000 worth of services such as website development, business planning, marketing strategies, photography and video production, tax and legal advice.

ODonnell stated that starting and operating a small business can be incredibly difficult and the MBB program aims to connect business owners with experts in areas where they need the most help. The ultimate goal is to help Mesa business owners build their capacity, stabilize their operations and reach new levels of success.

In addition to personalized consulting services, participating businesses can also take advantage of the Mesa Business Builder Educates U program. This initiative covers tuition and course fees at Mesa Community College for owners or employees who wish to enroll in career-focused classes in 14 certificate programs. Last fiscal year saw 17 students from 20 different businesses complete a total of 100 credit hours through this opportunity.

To be eligible for the MBB program, businesses must be located within the City of Mesa and have less than 25 full-time employees. They must also hold a Mesa General Business License or other qualifying license from the city. Applications for the program will open on July 8 on the Mesa HUUB platform. More information about eligibility requirements and additional support services can be found on MesaBusinessBuilder.com. For any further inquiries or assistance with applications, interested parties can contact Project Manager Kelley Keffer at 480-644-6958 or via email at MesaBusinessBuilder@mesaaz.gov.

ODonnell emphasized that Mesa is dedicated to building a resilient and inclusive local economy, and supporting small businesses is a crucial part of that mission. She expressed pride in being able to offer tools and resources that can help the business community move forward with confidence. The MBB program is just one of the ways in which the city is working towards this goal.
