Arizona: Governor Katie Hobbs Statement on Funding for Children in Foster Care, Urgent Need for DDD Funding

Trending...
Phoenix, AZ ~ Phoenix, AZ - Governor Katie Hobbs has called on Republican lawmakers to pass clean funding for the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) and show Arizonans their budget. This comes after days of grandstanding by Republican lawmakers, causing the Department of Child Safety (DCS) to proceed with necessary and routine Special Line Item (SLI) transfers to protect children in foster care from their political games.

As a former social worker who began her career working with homeless youth, Governor Hobbs is determined to protect children in foster care from what she calls "shameful political stunts." She stated, "I will do everything in my power to ensure that these vulnerable children are not used as pawns in political games."

The Governor also expressed her disappointment in the Republican majority for using individuals with autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy as political pawns. She criticized their lack of action and suggested that they have called for reforms without offering any solutions. She also pointed out that they have refused to show their plan to Arizonans while continuing to waste time with unnecessary committees.

Governor Hobbs emphasized the urgency of passing a clean DDD supplemental instead of wasting time on empty political rhetoric. She stated, "If they refuse to pass my common sense funding measures, they need to show Arizonans their plan and send me a budget."

It is worth noting that DCS has utilized SLI transfers every year since 2016. A history of these transfers can be found on the department's website.

The Governor's call for action comes at a critical time when essential services for some of Arizona's most vulnerable populations are at risk due to political games. It is now up to Republican lawmakers to heed her call and take immediate action before it's too late.
