Phoenix, AZ ~ Phoenix, AZ - Governor Katie Hobbs has been making strides in her efforts to make the American Dream a reality for everyday Arizonans. Last week, she took the time to visit two families who were able to purchase their first homes with the help of the Arizona Is Home mortgage assistance program.
The program, which was announced by Governor Hobbs during her 2024 State of the State address, aims to assist first-time homebuyers with down payments and interest rate buydowns. This initiative is part of her commitment to making housing more affordable for residents of Arizona and addressing the ongoing housing affordability crisis.
During her visits, Governor Hobbs expressed her excitement and support for these families as they embark on their journey as homeowners. Yudiria Redondo, one of the recipients of the program's assistance, shared her joy at being able to achieve her dream of homeownership. "It's like making your dreams come true," she said. "I think everybody wants to be a homeowner. I'm very proud of everything."
The funds provided through the Arizona Is Home program are interest-free, according to Araceli Jimenez, a HUD housing counselor with Administration of Resources & Choices. She helped Redondo secure $30,000 in down payment assistance for her newly purchased 1,380-square-foot home. Jimenez recalled how Redondo initially doubted that she would be able to afford a home on her own but was pleasantly surprised when she received the news.

Governor Hobbs also visited Maria Contreras, another recipient of the program's assistance. As a recent widow with four children, Contreras was able to move out of a rental property and begin building equity in a home that she can pass down to future generations thanks to $30,000 in down payment assistance from Arizona Is Home.
Hobbs emphasized that this program has already helped 362 families and hopes to continue its success through another round of funding. She also highlighted the importance of providing stability for families through homeownership, stating that "the difference between renting and owning is huge."
The success of the Arizona Is Home program has not gone unnoticed. Local news outlets such as KOLD, Telemundo, KGUN, and Tucson Sentinel have all reported on Governor Hobbs' visits and the impact of the program on these families. The Arizona Daily Star also published an article highlighting how the program has helped hundreds of first-time homebuyers like Contreras.
Governor Hobbs remains committed to addressing housing affordability in Arizona, regardless of political affiliation. "Housing affordability is an issue across the state," she stated. "This program is doing exactly what we want it to do." With her leadership and initiatives like Arizona Is Home, Governor Hobbs is making strides towards making homeownership a reality for more Arizonans.
