~ Construction has officially begun on Fire Station 224 in southeast Mesa, with a groundbreaking ceremony held this morning. The new fire station, located at 3441 S. 80th St. north of Elliot Road, is expected to address the projected increase in emergency calls and reduce response times for fire and medical services as the area continues to experience growth.
Mayor Mark Freeman expressed his gratitude to the community for their support in making this project possible. "This fire station is more than just a construction project, it is a promise to our community," he stated. "In 2022, Mesa voters showed their trust in us by approving the Public Safety Bond, and today we are turning that trust into reality with the groundbreaking for Fire Station 224."
Funding for the $12.3 million facility comes from the 2022 Public Safety Bond Initiative, which was approved by Mesa voters. Vice Mayor and District 6 Councilmember Scott Somers emphasized the importance of this investment in ensuring the safety and resilience of southeast Mesa as it continues to grow. "Fire Station 224 will provide our residents with the emergency response resources they need close at hand," he said. "This project will help us keep pace with growth while maintaining the high level of service our residents expect and deserve."

The new fire station will feature three drive-thru apparatus bays, dorm rooms, offices, a kitchen, dining room, and job/task conditioning areas. It has been designed to accommodate future growth and changing call volumes. While it has the capacity to house multiple units, it will initially be home to Engine 224, a four-person unit.
According to Fire and Medical Chief Mary Cameli, every new fire station strengthens their ability to fulfill their mission of CARE: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence. "Fire Station 224 will expand our reach and improve response times," she stated. "This means better outcomes for our residents. I want to express my appreciation to the Mesa voters for giving us the tools to serve our community at the highest level."
Mesa City Manager Scott Butler also emphasized the importance of public safety as a core function of municipal government. "Mesa is committed to strategic public safety infrastructure investments that futureproof our city," he said. "This includes addressing current needs and accounting for projected growth in the region."

Construction of Fire Station 224 is expected to be completed in fall 2026. It is one of several fire stations that will be coming online over the next few years. Fire Station 222, located at 1333 N. Power Road, opened earlier this summer. The rebuild of Fire Station 205 at 730 S. Greenfield Road is set to begin this fall, and construction on Fire Station 223, near 32nd Street and McDowell, will start this winter.
The addition of these new fire stations will not only improve response times and expand services for residents but also demonstrate Mesa's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its growing community.
