~ Mesa, AZ - The City of Mesa has recently announced the recipients of the Mesa Youth Climate Action Fund (MYCAF), a program that aims to empower young people to take action against climate change. Supported by a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, the fund has awarded a total of $84,494 to 18 community groups in Mesa.

Mayor Mark Freeman expressed his excitement for the program, stating that "our young people are the future of our community." He also commended the creativity and passion shown by the selected projects and their potential positive impact on the community.

The initiatives chosen this year cover a wide range of climate priorities, including water stewardship, heat mitigation, sustainable food systems, air quality, energy and materials management. All projects are expected to be completed by October 31st.

One project, "Brewing a Sustainable Future at Jarrod's Coffee, Tea & Gallery" by GreenLight Solutions, aims to reduce the environmental footprint at a local coffee shop through energy efficiency, waste-diversion and water stewardship initiatives. Another project by Mountain View High School called "Buddy Benches" seeks to create cooler and more inclusive spaces on campus by installing benches and planting trees and shrubbery for shade.

Other projects include educating Mesa youth on sustainability practices through an educational cookbook called "Dirt to Dinner," expanding school and community gardens with student-led composting systems, and creating habitats for monarch butterflies with native plants.

The MYCAF initiative is part of the City of Mesa's Climate Action Plan (MCAP), which is a priority initiative for Mayor and Council. The plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, build resilience in the community, and address the negative effects of climate change.

Bloomberg Philanthropies has been a key supporter of MYCAF as part of their mission to improve lives through various areas such as education, government innovation, public health, and now environmental initiatives like MYCAF.

The City of Mesa is proud to support and empower its youth to take action against climate change through the MYCAF program. With the help of Bloomberg Philanthropies, these young leaders are making a real impact in their community and setting an example for others to follow.
