~ Mesa Launches Community-Driven Initiative to Promote Safer Roadway Behaviors
The City of Mesa's Transportation Department has announced the launch of the MesaMoves Look Twice Save a Life Challenge, a community-driven initiative aimed at promoting safer driving, biking, and walking behaviors. This effort comes in response to the alarming statistics that show 1,359 people were seriously injured or killed on Mesa roadways between 2017 and 2022 - an average of four people each week.
Mayor Freeman expressed the urgency of this initiative, stating, "This effort is about saving lives. While infrastructure improvements and strong law enforcement are crucial, true success depends on the active participation of our entire community."
The Look Twice Challenge was inspired by Alexander Cole Fernandez, a 20-year-old Mesa resident who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle crash in June 2024. His father, George Fernandez, reached out to the City of Mesa with the Alexander Cole Fernandez Foundation to collaborate on raising community awareness.
In an interview with the City of Mesa, George Fernandez emphasized the importance of practicing roadway safety and being mindful while on the road. He urged residents to drive with intention and be responsible for themselves as someday it could be their loved one or family member involved in a tragic accident. The City will release a video about Alexander's story tomorrow on their social media channels.

The Look Twice Challenge highlights the significance of being aware on the road and looking twice before making any movements. To encourage residents to adopt safer roadway habits, participants have the chance to win prizes such as bicycles, museum memberships, gift cards, and safety gear by signing up at mesaaz.gov/mesamoves and earning points through various activities.
These activities include taking an online safety pledge, participating in social media challenges using #looktwicemesa or #mesamoves, joining a holiday-themed scavenger hunt in December, and signing up for the road safety newsletter.
The Look Twice Challenge is part of the Mesa Safer Streets Initiative and aligns with the City's Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (CSAP), which aims to create a culture of roadway safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 30% by 2030.
The Look Twice Challenge will run from October 9th to December 6th, with winners being announced following the Reindeer Roll and Stroll event in December.
