~ Mesa, AZ - The city of Mesa is calling upon its residents to play an active role in shaping their community by serving on the City's volunteer advisory boards and committees. These boards provide a platform for residents to share their knowledge, expertise, and experience to help inform City leadership and City Council decisions on a wide range of policies, programs, and services that impact Mesa's quality of life.
Recruitment for advisory boards and committees is ongoing, with applications being accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. The Mayor recommends appointments which are then approved by the City Council. The current openings for these positions are listed below, with a term of service lasting three years. Interested individuals can find more information about the various boards and committees and apply at mesaaz.gov/boards.
One such board is the Board of Adjustment, which conducts public hearings to hear and decide upon requests for variances, special use permits, and interpretations of the City of Mesa Ordinance and Sign Code. Currently, there are three openings for Community Representatives on this board.
The Building Board of Appeals is responsible for hearing appeals to determinations made by the Building Safety Director or Fire Marshal. They also make decisions on reasonable interpretations of building regulations and fire regulations while recommending changes to building codes. This board is currently seeking applicants for one Community Representative, one Homebuilder, and one Plumbing/Mechanical Contractor.

The Design Review Board reviews buildings over four stories in height as well as multiple residential projects that exceed the RM-2 density range. They also review commercial and industrial projects that have frontage on an arterial street or are part of an existing or planned development with frontage on an arterial street. Additionally, they review parking garages and City of Mesa municipal projects. Currently, there is an opening for one Architect on this board.
The Economic Development Advisory Board serves as an advisory board to the City Council on matters related to economic development such as goal setting, strategic planning, and business recruitment, retention, and expansion. They are currently seeking two Community Representatives to join their board.
The Historic Preservation Board plays a crucial role in preserving the city's historic resources by making recommendations to various committees and boards. They are currently seeking two Community Representatives to join their board.
The Housing and Community Development Advisory Board advises the City Council on housing, community development, social services priorities, funding, and planning across the community. They are currently seeking one Community Representative, one Manufactured Housing Development representative, and one Single-Housing Development representative.

The Museum and Cultural Advisory Board advises the City Council on policies related to arts and cultural facilities and services as well as public art. They also make recommendations on fees and charges while advocating for arts and culture. Currently, there is an opening for one Community Representative on this board.
The Parks and Recreation Board provides recommendations to the City Council regarding the operation and development of all City parks, recreational facilities, and programming. They are currently seeking two Community Representatives to join their board.
The Personnel Appeals Board makes recommendations to the City Manager concerning employee grievances, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals referred to them for an opinion. They are currently seeking one Community Representative for this position.
Lastly, the Planning and Zoning Board conducts hearings and makes recommendations to the City Council on requests for changes in zoning as well as required site plans. They also consider changes in long-range plans and municipal codes related to planning and zoning matters. Currently, there are two openings for Community Representatives on this board as well as three alternate board members with a design-related profession.
