Governor Katie Hobbs Announces Departure of Major General Kerry Muehlenbeck, Adjutant General of Arizona and Director of Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs

Phoenix, AZ ~ Phoenix, AZ - In a statement released today, Governor Katie Hobbs announced that Major General Kerry Muehlenbeck will be stepping down from her role as the Adjutant General of Arizona and Director of the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs on June 7, 2025. After four years of service in this position, Muehlenbeck will be returning to her civilian position as a professor at Mesa Community College.

As the Adjutant General, Muehlenbeck has been responsible for overseeing Arizona's Army and Air National Guard, Joint Programs, and the Division of Emergency Management. Under her leadership, the Arizona National Guard launched Task Force SAFE, an ongoing effort to prevent dangerous drugs from entering the state. Additionally, she led one of the largest rescue missions in the state's history when devastating floods hit Havasupai and resulted in the evacuation of over 100 people.

Governor Hobbs expressed her gratitude for Muehlenbeck's service to the people of Arizona and praised her dedication to public safety. She also highlighted Muehlenbeck's role in launching Task Force SAFE and leading the successful rescue mission in Havasupai. The governor wished Muehlenbeck all the best in her future endeavors.

In response to her departure, Major General Kerry Muehlenbeck stated that it has been an honor to serve as Arizona's Adjutant General. She expressed her appreciation for being able to work alongside dedicated individuals both in and out of uniform in service to Arizona and the nation. Muehlenbeck also thanked Governor Hobbs, Governor Ducey, and their teams for their trust and commitment to protecting the citizens of Arizona.

Maj. Gen. Kerry Muehlenbeck began her military career in 1992 when she joined the active duty Air Force as an attorney in the Judge Advocate General Corps. After leaving active duty, she joined the Arizona Air National Guard in 1997 and held various legal and command roles. In addition to her military service, Muehlenbeck has had a distinguished civilian career as an attorney and educator. She has served as an Assistant Prosecutor in Saginaw County, a Deputy County Attorney at the Pima County Attorney's Office, an Associate Professor at Arizona State University, and a full-time residential faculty member at Mesa Community College.

Muehlenbeck's impressive educational background includes a B.S. in Education and Social Policy from Northwestern University, a J.D. from Indiana School of Law, an LL.M. in Criminal Law from the University of San Diego School of Law, and a Ph.D. in Justice Studies from Arizona State University. She has also completed various military education programs such as Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College.

As Major General Kerry Muehlenbeck prepares to depart from her role as Adjutant General of Arizona, she leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service to the state and its citizens.
