Governor Katie Hobbs Statement on Republican Lawmakers' Funding Proposal for Arizonans with Disabilities

Trending...
Phoenix, AZ ~ Phoenix, AZ - In a recent statement released by Governor Katie Hobbs, she expressed her disappointment in Republican lawmakers for continuing to hold Arizonans with disabilities hostage. The ongoing issue revolves around a DDD funding bill that not only jeopardizes housing projects for seniors and Veterans, but also guts Arizona's down payment assistance program.

According to Governor Hobbs, the legislative majority has been playing political games for months, causing unnecessary delays and putting the lives of individuals with Down syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy at risk. She stated that their current legislation is "dead on arrival" and urged for a swift resolution to the issue.

While there have been efforts to reach an agreement, Governor Hobbs emphasized the need to stop wasting time and prioritize the well-being of Arizonans with disabilities and their caregivers. She proposed using the Prescription Drug Rebate Fund as a source of funding to protect critical programs for individuals with disabilities. This money is readily available pending legislative approval and is not currently serving any other purpose.

However, Republican lawmakers seem determined to make matters worse by pushing forward with their bill that will strip funding from down payment assistance and interest rate buydown programs. This move will not only exacerbate Arizona's housing crisis but also jeopardize ongoing affordable housing construction projects across the state.

Governor Hobbs stressed that sacrificing opportunities for working-class families to achieve the American Dream and cutting stable housing options for seniors and Veterans is not a solution. She called on all parties to work together towards finding a true solution instead of using this manufactured crisis as a means to score political points.

The Republican bill in question aims to slash funding for the Housing Trust Fund, effectively ending the Arizona is Home program that provides down payment assistance and interest rate buydowns for first-time homebuyers. It also includes cuts to affordable housing funding. Governor Hobbs labeled this attempt as a ploy to break contracts, delay projects, leave construction bills unpaid, and ultimately raise housing costs.

As the situation continues to unfold, Governor Hobbs urged for swift action to be taken in order to provide much-needed support for Arizonans with disabilities and their families. She emphasized the urgency of the matter and called on all parties to put aside political differences and work towards a solution that benefits all Arizonans.
