With temperatures expected to reach triple digits in Arizona, it is important for pet owners to be aware of the potential dangers that come with the rising thermometer.

Mayor Mark Freeman emphasized the importance of keeping pets safe during this time, stating, "They're part of our families, and as we approach our high heat days, we all need to take extra care to keep them safe."

To help pet owners navigate the hot weather, Mesa Animal Control has provided some safety tips. These include making sure animals are protected from the heat as temperatures rise and leaving them at home when running errands or going to the store.

If there is an emergency involving an animal or if you see an animal locked in a vehicle or being abused or neglected, it is important to call 911 immediately. Additionally, providing access to shade and shelter from the heat is just as crucial as ensuring they have enough water.

When deciding whether it is safe to walk your dog in warmer conditions, consider whether you would be able to walk without shoes on hot sidewalks or pavement. If not, it is likely too hot for your pet as well.

For those with pools at home, it is important to make sure your dog knows how to swim and where the steps are located. If your dog cannot exit the pool due to size or medical issues, it is best to leave them inside when you are unable to supervise them around the pool area.

With Fourth of July celebrations approaching, it is also important for pet owners not to bring their animals along for outdoor activities where there will be fireworks. Instead, leave them at home with the television or radio on to help cover the noise and close the blinds to avoid any bright flashing lights that may alarm them.

Miguel Hernandez, Supervisor of Mesa Animal Control, stressed the importance of being responsible for your pets during this time. "If you see an animal struggling in the heat, don't hesitate to call us," he said.

It is also crucial for pets to have proper identification in case they do escape. This includes current licenses for dogs and microchips with up-to-date information. Leaving an animal in a vehicle intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly is considered a class one misdemeanor in Arizona and can result in jail time, probation, and a fine of up to $2,500.
