Mesa Asks You to be Monsoon Ready

Trending...
~ As summer arrives, so does the season of storms in Mesa. The sudden onset of monsoon weather can bring about dangerous conditions, including downed power lines and trees, power outages, and flooded streets. Among the most vulnerable during these storms are the elderly and homebound individuals. In light of this, Mesa Fire Chief Mary Cameli is reminding residents to check on their neighbors to ensure their safety.

According to Chief Cameli, neighbors can play a crucial role in providing assistance during monsoon season. By checking in on each other, lending a helping hand, and staying alert, they can make all the difference in keeping everyone safe. While preparedness starts at home, resilience is built together as a community.

To help older and homebound neighbors prepare for potential storms, residents are encouraged to make sure they have necessary supplies such as sandbags. It is also important to check if they have a backup source for power or a way to keep refrigerated prescriptions cool during a power outage.

In addition to individual preparations, all Mesa residents are urged to have an evacuation plan for severe situations and a disaster kit with essential items such as water, non-perishable foods, flashlights, batteries, medications, and first aid supplies. Pet owners should also have a disaster kit ready for their furry companions. Staying updated on current weather forecasts is also crucial.

For those in need of sandbags, the city has made them available at various locations throughout Mesa. Residents are advised to bring their own shovel when collecting sand from fire stations 202, 208, 209 and 212. The Transportation Department has also pre-filled sandbags at the Transportation Building and East Mesa Service Center for residents' convenience.
