~ Mesa, AZ - The city of Mesa is inviting the public to join in on the celebration of a major expansion at Red Mountain Park located at 7745 E. Brown Road. The event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 5 from 5:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a brief program scheduled for 6 p.m. The program will conclude with a ceremonial goal kick, followed by various activities such as soccer games and practices, tee-ball with players from the Oakland Athletics organization, cornhole, adaptive bocce ball, an interactive lacrosse experience and free snacks.

The expansion includes 10 new multi-use fields for sports like soccer and lacrosse, as well as four new baseball/softball fields. Two of these fields will have MuscoVision, which offers live video streaming for those who are unable to attend games in person. Additionally, high-tech scoreboards funded by the Oakland Athletics have been installed at each baseball/softball field.

With this latest phase completed, Red Mountain Park now boasts 314 acres of developed parkland. The park originally opened in 1988 and also features playgrounds, volleyball and pickleball courts, equestrian trails, two disc golf courses, a community fishing lake and a multigenerational center spanning over 76-thousand-square-feet.

Councilmember Goforth expressed her pride as a representative for this vibrant part of Mesa and thanked residents for their feedback throughout this project's development. She believes that having such a large park is a valuable asset for the city and expects it to become a popular destination for families, friends, and neighbors to connect, stay active, and enjoy.

The 80-acre expansion of Red Mountain Park also incorporates environmentally friendly measures such as playing turf that requires less water, perimeter landscaping designed to reduce irrigation requirements and maintenance, and LED lights that are energy efficient and minimize glare. In addition, 749 new trees have been planted in accordance with Mayor Giles' Trees are Cool Initiative goal of adding one million new trees by 2050. Several existing trees from the construction site were also salvaged and reused within the park.

Troy Campbell, Chair of the Mesa Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, expressed his excitement for the expansion of Red Mountain Park. He believes that it has always been a great park but now has an even greater "wow" factor with so much more to offer Mesa residents on both sides of Brown Road.

Funding for this expansion was made possible by the 2018 Parks Bond approved by voters. This project was the largest included in the bond and is a testament to the community's commitment to enhancing their parks and recreational spaces. The public is encouraged to attend the celebration on Sept. 5th to see firsthand all that Red Mountain Park has to offer.
