~ Mesa City Council Appoints Scott Butler as New City Manager
The Mesa City Council has unanimously selected Scott Butler to serve as the new City Manager, succeeding Christopher J. Brady who announced his retirement in January after nearly two decades of transformative leadership. Butler, who has been serving as the Assistant City Manager since July 2022, brings with him almost 21 years of experience with the City of Mesa.
In his new role, Butler will be responsible for guiding the city through its next chapter and ensuring its continued success. "Mesa is positioned for an incredible future. I'm honored to have been selected to help guide our city through its next chapter," said Butler. "My approach will balance fiscal discipline with strategic innovation, ensuring we continue to deliver exceptional services while developing the economic vitality our community deserves."
Butler's extensive experience with the city includes serving as Deputy City Manager from 2015 to 2022 and Director of Government Relations from 2008 to 2015. He has also overseen critical departments such as Police, Fire and Medical, Municipal Court, Transportation, Transit and Falcon Field.

Mayor Mark Freeman expressed confidence in Butler's ability to lead the organization, stating that his deep understanding of the community makes him the ideal candidate for the role. "Scott has foundational and institutional knowledge of the City of Mesa. He knows what makes the City successful and has firsthand knowledge of the challenges ahead," said Mayor Freeman.
Throughout his career with Mesa, Butler has been instrumental in numerous transformative projects such as securing the Chicago Cubs' continued presence in Mesa and acquiring the Air Force Research Labs. He also played a key role in developing partnerships with Arizona State University and Maricopa Community College District to attract high-wage employers to Mesa.
Outgoing City Manager Chris Brady praised Butler's growth during his tenure with Mesa and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the city forward. "Scott has a unique ability to balance long-term vision with day-to-day management of the City. He understands Mesa's operations from the ground up and has earned the trust of staff and community stakeholders," said Brady.

Butler's priorities as City Manager will include maintaining fiscal responsibility, streamlining development processes, and attracting high-wage employers to Mesa. He will also focus on enhancing placemaking initiatives and maintaining the city's commitment to public safety.
Before joining Mesa in 2004, Butler served in various roles at the local, state, and federal government levels. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia.

The new City Manager will officially assume his role on June 1, 2025, and continue building on the strong foundation established by his predecessor.
