~ The Mesa Main Library, located at 64 E. First St., is set to undergo a major transformation with the installation of solar panel canopies. These canopies will not only provide covered parking for visitors, but also increase the library's energy generation capacity. However, this construction project will have a significant impact on parking availability and sidewalks in the area.
According to city officials, the first phase of construction will begin on February 3rd and will last through March. During this time, access to the library's parking lot will only be available from Centennial Street. Additionally, temporary ADA parking spots will be provided on the east side of the library near the Centennial Street entrance.
This project is part of a larger initiative approved by the Mesa City Council to install over 2,000 kilowatts of solar panels at four downtown locations. The Main Library project aims to benefit downtown businesses and residents by creating locally generated energy for electric system resiliency, diversifying the city's energy supply to minimize high electric market pricing, and supporting renewable energy goals. The solar panel canopies are expected to provide shaded parking for approximately 660 spaces in downtown Mesa.

Other locations included in this initiative are the Charles K. Luster Building at 640 N. Mesa Drive, Transportation Building at 600 E. 6th St., and Solid Waste Division and Electric Meter Shop at 730 N. Mesa Drive.
The City of Mesa has already implemented several solar generation projects in recent years, including installations at Mesa City Hall parking lot, Mesa Municipal Building parking lot, ASU MIX Center rooftop, and City of Mesa ice rink building rooftop. These projects have been successful in generating power for use in the city's electric utility.
In addition to these downtown locations, solar panel canopies have also been installed in parking lots of City of Mesa buildings located within SRP's service territory. This has resulted in lower utility bills for these locations, including the Red Mountain Library, Red Mountain Center, Fiesta Police Substation, and Fire Station 212.
The installation of solar panel canopies at the Mesa Main Library and other downtown locations is a significant step towards achieving the city's renewable energy goals and promoting sustainable practices. The City of Mesa remains committed to finding innovative ways to reduce its carbon footprint and provide benefits for its residents and businesses.
