~ Mesa, AZ- A 16-year-old girl was recognized by the City of Mesa and the Wisconsin National Guard for her heroic actions that saved the life of a soldier. Laya Jackson, who learned CPR at the age of 10 through an online class, witnessed 1st Sgt. Clint Vervoren collapse while running in Mesa on June 27.

Jackson immediately sprang into action, calling 911 and performing CPR on Vervoren until emergency responders arrived. Her quick thinking and knowledge of CPR gave Vervoren the best possible chance for recovery.

"I watch a lot of medical shows and knew something was wrong. It was mostly adrenaline being able to put him on his back and perform CPR. I learned CPR during COVID and being able to remember it was surprising," said Jackson. "I was filled with determination to make sure he was okay."

Mesa Vice Mayor Scott Somers praised Jackson's bravery and quick response, stating, "Laya saw someone in need and immediately stepped up to help. Her quick thinking and willingness to act made a life-changing difference. We are proud to recognize her and grateful for the example she has set for our community."

During the brief ceremony held this morning, 1st Sgt. Vervoren and his family were in attendance, giving him the opportunity to personally thank Jackson for her courage and lifesaving actions.

"She rang the bell and answered the call. She was faced with a moment that would cause most people to freeze," said Vervoren. "Laya gave me one act of courage that gave me a lifetime I might not otherwise have had." He presented her with military ID tags as a symbol of service and sacrifice, with one tag bearing the inscription "One Act of Courage" and the other "One Act of Gratitude."

Brig. Gen. Brion Aderman, Deputy Adjutant General for Army in Wisconsin National Guard, expressed his gratitude for Jackson's actions, stating, "We are deeply grateful for Laya's actions. Her willingness to step in without hesitation demonstrates exceptional character and undoubtedly saved a soldier's life."

The ceremony was also attended by senior leaders from the Wisconsin National Guard and Mesa firefighters and paramedics who responded to the 911 call. The City of Mesa and the Wisconsin National Guard commend Jackson for her bravery and quick thinking, setting an example for others in the community to follow.
