Mesa Unveils New Street Banners to Honor Volunteers

~ Mesa, AZ - The City of Mesa is showing its appreciation for its dedicated volunteers by unveiling new banners along Main Street downtown during National Volunteer Week. These banners serve as a tribute to the more than 12,400 individuals who selflessly gave their time, energy, and talents to serve others in 2024.

Mayor Mark Freeman expressed his gratitude for the volunteers, stating that they make the community stronger and more connected. He also highlighted their significant contributions, which touch every corner of the city. In total, City of Mesa volunteers contributed over 119,000 hours of work in 2024, resulting in a cost savings of $3,985,310 for the city.

As a JustServe City, Mesa is honoring two exceptional volunteers with the JustServe Hero Award for their service in the Mesa Fire and Medical Department. Joanne and Paul Brenner have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to volunteering and have made a significant impact in their community. They were recognized for their efforts during a brief program this morning along Main Street near the City of Mesa mural.

Bethany Freeland, Fire and Safety Life Education Specialist with Mesa Fire and Medical Department, praised the Brenners for their dedication and leadership as Connectors within the department. She stated that they are role models who embody compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence (CARE).

In addition to honoring outstanding volunteers like the Brenners, Mayor Freeman also issued a proclamation in honor of National Volunteer Week during today's program. The new National Volunteer Week banners were unveiled at this event and will be displayed throughout the week. These banners showcase various volunteer programs and feature testimonials from those who have been impacted by volunteerism.
