~ Mesa, Arizona - The Gateway Library, located at 5036 S. Eastmark Parkway in southeast Mesa, has been shortlisted for the prestigious International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions/James Bennett (IFLA) Public Library of the Year Award for 2026.
The IFLA Public Library of the Year award celebrates excellence in public library design, innovation, and community impact on a global scale. It recognizes the most inspiring new public libraries that have set new benchmarks for accessibility, sustainability, flexibility, and user experience.
After a rigorous evaluation process, the jury has shortlisted four outstanding libraries for this year's award. These libraries are Library+ Caloundra in Sunshine Coast, Australia; West Las Vegas Library in Nevada, United States; Xiong'An Library in Hebei Province, China; and Mesa Gateway Library in Arizona, United States.
"We are incredibly honored for the Gateway Library to be recognized on an international level," said Polly Bonnett, Director of Mesa Public Library. "The vision for this library was to create a beacon that brings the community together and serves as a gateway to connect with the wider world. The thoughtful design of the building allows us to provide innovative library services that will impact generations to come."

Designed by Mesa native Kevin Kolden of Richrd Kennedy Architects, the state-of-the-art facility spans approximately 28,000 square feet and features an open concept inspired by open-air markets around the world. With soaring wood ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and natural materials connecting it to its surroundings, the library offers a multi-purpose room, THINKspot collaborative makerspace, and specific areas for adults, teens and children's resources. Other notable features include a digital art display wall, outdoor reading patio and plaza that can be used for community events.
The Gateway Library has already received recognition from both the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and American Library Association (ALA). The biennial IIDA/ALA competition acknowledges excellence in library interior design and promotes creative design concepts.
The library, which opened on December 6, 2025, was funded by the 2018 General Obligation Bond approved by voters and construction sales tax. It was built by Willmeng Construction.
The winner of the IFLA Public Library of the Year Award will be announced on August 10, 2026, as part of the 90th IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) in Busan, South Korea. The recipient will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and international recognition as the IFLA/James Bennett Public Library of the Year for 2026.
