Non=Functional Turf Removal Begins at Mesa City Parks and Basins

Trending...
~ Mesa, Arizona - In an effort to reduce water usage and promote sustainability, the city of Mesa has begun a project to remove non-functional turf at over 50 parks and basins. This initiative, which is part of Mesa's Climate Action Plan goals, was made possible by a $1.06 million Water Conservation Grant Fund Award from Arizona's Water Infrastructure Finance Authority (WIFA).

The project involves removing 6-foot strips of non-functional turf adjacent to infrastructure, such as block walls, and replacing it with landscape rock and cement curbing. This will save over five million gallons of water annually and reduce the need for irrigation and mowing at the selected locations.

"We're grateful to Arizona's Water Infrastructure Finance Authority for awarding Mesa this grant and supporting our efforts to create sustainable public spaces," said Mesa Mayor John Giles. "Their investment in this project highlights the importance of state and local collaboration in tackling regional water challenges. Together, we are making strides towards water resilience in Mesa and across Arizona."

The non-functional turf removal project will primarily take place in parks that are served by Colorado River water, which is the focus of WIFA's grant program. By removing non-functional turf, the city aims to reduce the use of existing water supplies, promote water security, and decrease energy consumption associated with water pumping and treatment.

"We are excited to have started work on reducing non-functional turf in our park system," said Andrea Moore, Director of Mesa Parks and Recreation. "When finished in the Winter of 2025, we will have removed over five acres of grass at over 50 parks in limited areas that are not used for recreation and play. This will save precious water resources."

This project aligns with Mesa City Council's strategic priorities of Sustainable Environment and Neighborhoods and Placemaking. It strengthens the city's commitment to water stewardship and reducing water usage.

With this initiative, Mesa is taking a proactive approach to address water challenges and create a more sustainable future for its residents. The city hopes to serve as an example for other communities in Arizona and beyond.
