A true collision of literary horror, contemporary dance theatre, and the mirages of Arizona's landscape, MASQUE emerges from the dust- and drought-ridden ghost town of a forgotten dimension where POE meets PARACOSM meets PHX
PHOENIX - Arizonar -- Paracosm Dance brings its dance theatre madness back to the Orpheum Theatre this fall with a surreal, wild west movement adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Masque of the Red Death. Created by Founder + Artistic Director Alyssa Johnson, Paracosm's latest world premiere hits the stage for one night only.
OCTOBER 2nd, 2026 | 8PM | The Orpheum Theatre | Preshow Experience at 7:30PM
PRESALE: May 6th - May 17th, all seats $25 (before fees)
GENERAL ADMISSION: Starting May 18th, $35 all seats (before fees)

MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH includes an original score by SEMIQUAVER (composer for Paracosm's previous Orpheum debut, VISITORS), large-scale set design by Bekah Unsworth, and the powerhouse movement collaborators of Paracosm Dance. Bringing multimodality ferocity, athleticism, and artistry to the stage, MASQUE features contemporary dance, capoeira, distortions of classical ballet, martial arts, social dance, circus artists, physical actors, aerial dance, and eleven clawfoot bathtubs.

"A motley crew of highly-articulate, gorgeous dancers." – Kyra Laubacher, Editor at Dance Magazine, Words on Dance
"A dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker, Johnson doesn't just choreograph bodies – she orchestrates experiences…She's built a kaleidoscope world where movement is the first and final word, and where story, sound, and spectacle collide in gloriously messy, emotionally raw, and defiantly queer expressions of the human condition." – Josafath Reynoso, Chief Editor at Skene
