SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Arizonar -- Royse Contemporary welcomes Angel Cabrales with his solo exhibition "Celestial Cochitta (Multiversal Dreams in the IIhuicatl)". He has created an enthralling exhibition where the viewer can explore "a parallel world, where the Western Hemisphere averted colonization, and the indigenous people of the lands thrived unobstructed. This universe is a utopia of bountiful wonders where Aztechnonauts explore the heavens, Mayathmaticians unlock secrets of the universe, Olmchemists create new polymers, and Zapotecknical engineers build the architecture of the future. "It celebrates the indigenous heritage of people like me and is intended to invoke curiosity into the untaught histories of our Mesoamerican legacy," states Cabrales.
Growing up Cabrales was taught to take pride in his Mexican heritage and his family traced back their Spanish lineage, but their indigenous half was vaguely known. This prompted the artist to research his ancestry further, discovering his culturally rich lineage which includes the Rarámuri people of Chihuahua, Mexico, and the highly sophisticated and technologically advanced ancient societies of Mesoamerica. "Through a Sci-Fi-inspired vision, I aim to inspire others to research their own affluent heritages and fully embrace their complex ancestry," declares Cabrales.

Angel Cabrales is a multimedia artist and arts educator based in El Paso, Texas. His work examines aspects of Latinx identity, immigration, inequality and histories, a part of American culture that is misconstrued because of political and media rhetoric. He merges media with intangible elements, such as his upbringing within the storied scientific history of New Mexico and political realities of the Texas borderlands. The creation and engineering in his work creates an interactive experience that merges art with new technologies and the socio-political concerns of today.
Cabrales holds an MFA at the University of North Texas and a BFA at Arizona State University. His work is a part of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum's Estrellas y Cuentas initiative on Latinx Futurism. He is also a member of the International Sculpture Center, the Texas Sculpture Group, and the JUNTOS art collective. He is an associate professor and the head of Sculpture at the University of Texas at El Paso and has exhibited his work in numerous galleries and museums across the country.
