SURPRISE, Ariz. - Arizonar -- Students at Imagine Prep Surprise received their results from Cambridge Assessment International Examinations and the outcomes were outstanding.  Nine students tested in the November series because they missed the opportunity the previous year due to the pandemic. Some students sat multiple exams, and nearly all received qualifying marks.  Their excellent performance was in spite of a year where learning has been heavily disrupted by COVID-19 with uncertain learning environments for these students as they prepared for their exams.

Five students sat the history exam and each one scored exceptionally well.  Paul Barber, Korissa Hanchett, Sasha Alfieri, Betton Baca and Martin Mozier scored above qualification requirements with Mozier scoring the highest possible score.  World History instructor, Garrit Pickelmann paid tribute to their work ethic, "I could not be more proud of this group of students. Their scores are extremely impressive on their own but to combine them with the fact they learned this material under less than ideal circumstances last year with remote learning and all sorts of changes we had to go through."

Other exams were also taken, to include Chemistry, Physics, Literature, and Mathematics.  Michael Bates met qualifications in Chemistry and Amaki Hassel met the qualification in Physics. Baca and Hanchett met qualifications in Literature and Alfieri scored above qualification requirements.  In Mathematics, Bri Smith met qualifications and Amaki Hassel scored above qualification requirements, displaying mastery of content and skills.  Sara Camren, the Cambridge Coordinator and Exams Officer explained the value of these results, "These scores are important because they show that these students who earned them, despite a very abnormal and interrupted learning environment due to the pandemic, are college ready in these courses and that they will not need remediation to be successful in them."

The Principal of Imagine Prep Surprise, Chris McComb, was delighted with the results, "It's common to hear about learning loss when speaking about students and the pandemic, but it's equally important to recognize our students who are accomplishing amazing things in unprecedented times. I am proud of the work these students put into their studies and their perseverance to sit and perform on these rigorous exams. Kudos to their teachers too!"

These scores aid the students in their effort to achieve the Grand Canyon Diploma.  Earning the Grand Canyon Diploma (GCD) means that a student has the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in university, college level, and technical school courses that count towards a degree without taking remedial coursework.  The GCD is performance based and shows that students are prepared for College, Career, and Life.
