Phoenix, AZ ~ Phoenix, AZ - In a move to strengthen Arizona's education system, Governor Katie Hobbs has appointed Northern Arizona University President José Luis Cruz Rivera to the State Board of Education. The announcement was made today by Governor Hobbs, who praised Dr. Cruz Rivera as a strong partner in preparing every student for success.
"Dr. Cruz Rivera has been a steadfast leader for the students and faculty at NAU," said Governor Hobbs. "His dedication and commitment to improving education in our state make him the perfect fit for the State Board of Education. As a Lumberjack myself, I am thrilled to appoint him to this position and have no doubt that he will work tirelessly to create a public education system that ensures every Arizonan has a chance to thrive."
In response to his appointment, Dr. Cruz Rivera expressed his gratitude and emphasized the importance of a strong educational system for the future prosperity of Arizona.
"A strong educational system, from pre-K through college and beyond, is essential to the future prosperity of the people, communities, and economy of Arizona," said Dr. Cruz Rivera. "I am honored to be appointed to the State Board of Education by Governor Hobbs and look forward to furthering the important work of educational attainment and equity, strengthening collaborations between K-12 and higher education, and ensuring students in our state have access to high-quality educational opportunities."

The State Board of Education is responsible for regulating and developing rules concerning primary and secondary public education in Arizona. It consists of 11 members who are appointed by the governor.
Dr. Cruz Rivera brings with him a wealth of experience in higher education leadership. He has served as Northern Arizona University's 17th president since 2021 and previously held positions such as President of City University of New York's Herbert H. Lehman College and Executive Vice Chancellor at City University of New York's 25 campus system.
He has also served as Provost at California State University, Fullerton, Vice-President of Higher Education Policy and Practice at The Education Trust, and Chief Student Affairs Officer for the University of Puerto Rico system.
During his tenure at Northern Arizona University, Dr. Cruz Rivera has made significant strides in expanding access to education for Arizona students. This includes implementing new admissions and financial aid practices and launching statewide partnerships to boost educational attainment, all guided by the university's strategic roadmap, Elevating Excellence.
Governor Hobbs' appointment of Dr. Cruz Rivera to the State Board of Education is a testament to his dedication and expertise in improving education in Arizona. With his leadership, the board will continue its important work in ensuring that every student in the state has access to a high-quality education.
